Demographics & Psychographics

Demographics & Psychographics

In this piece of work I will discuss geo-demographics, demographics and psychographics, all involved within the media today.

ACORN

ACORN is the leading geo-demographic tool used to identify and understand the UK population and the demands for products and services.
Businesses use this information to improve their understanding of customers, target markets and determine where to locate operations.
ACORN categorises all 1.9 million UK postcodes. For instance people in similar areas have the same needs and lifestyles.

Socio-Economic

People in the UK are targeted based on their social class.
The categories are A, B, C1, C2, D, and E.
The things they are based on are things like, Occupations, Education, Economic status and Background.
Most newspapers in the UK still use this system to categorise people.

A – Upper Middle Class
B - Middle Class
C1 – Lower Middle Class
C2 – Skilled Working Class
D – Working Class
E – Those at the lowest level of subsistence.

As I have stated before most newspapers all over the UK still use the Socio-Economic system. The guardian uses A, B, and C1 to aim to appeal to the higher economy. Whereas The Daily Express uses B, C1 and C2 to aim at the middle class public. Finally a smaller free newspaper aims to appeal to people in the C2, D and E category as they are on a lower income, and the newspaper costs nothing.

Niche Markets

Niche Markets are small groups who are targeted because they share the same interests, income and needs etc.

Social Groups

There are many social groups, and most people are categorised in one.
- Rebel
- Trendies
- Cowboys
- Groupies
- Utopian
- Traditionalist
- Puritan
- Drop-Out
- Innovator
- Egoist
- Drifter
- Cynic

That is only to state a few, there are lots of different categories.

Psychographics

Psychographics is looking at the way people see themselves and the kind of lifestyle they would like to have. It involves looking at where you think you are now and where and what you want to be in the future.

Gender Representation in the Music Press!

As statistics go, we are lead to believe that mostly men read music magazines; it is very stereotypical to think this way. The more controversial and deep a magazine gets, it looks to be aimed at men. But if you were to see a bright pink NME magazine, you’d instantly think it was a woman’s magazine.

The only magazine I can think of that mainly aims at women is “Top of the pops”, but the features are child like, and include teen heartthrobs rather than middle aged men. Whereas NME, Kerrang, and MOJO are very well known, and are more likely for men to read, though they claim to be a mixed gender magazine.
